  • butter – ½ cup (softened, unsalted)
  • light brown sugar- 1 ½ cups (packed)
  • eggs, – 5 medium (room temperature)
  • Maple flavoring or maple syrup- 1 teaspoon
  • All-purpose flour-2 cups
  • Baking powder- 1 teaspoon
  • Baking soda- 1 teaspoon
  • Salt- ¼ teaspoon
  • Buttermilk- 1 cup
  • Candied Walnuts:
  • One tablespoon unsalted Butter- 1 tablespoon
  • 1-1/2 cups coarsely chopped walnuts- 1 ½ cup
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup- 1 tablespoon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt- ¼ teaspoon
  • Frosting:
  • Butter- 2 cups (softened, unsalted)
  • Maple flavoring or maple syrup- 1 teaspoon
  • Salt- ¼ teaspoon
  • Confectioners’ sugar- 5 cups
  • Heavy cream- ½ cup
  • Maple syrup- 3 tbsp


  1. Heat your oven to 350°F. Prepare three 9-inch round baking pans by greasing them, lining the bottoms with parchment paper, and then greasing the parchment as well.
  2. Start by creaming the Butter and brown sugar in a stand mixer until they’re light and fluffy, which should take about 5-7 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, thoroughly beating each into the mixture. 
  3. Then mix in the maple flavoring next.
  4.  Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl. Add these dry ingredients to the butter mixture in parts alternating with buttermilk, and beat well in a stand mixer after each addition.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 11-13 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. 
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely, removing the parchment paper.

Candied Walnut Preparation:

  1. To make candied walnuts, melt Butter in a large cooking pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the walnuts and toast for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add maple syrup and a pinch of salt and stir; cook for another minute, then spread them out on foil to cool.

Frosting Preparation:

  1. Wash the Butter in a stand mixer at medium speed for the frosting until it’s creamy.
  2. Then add the maple flavoring and a bit of salt and whip again.
  3. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar and enough cream to achieve the desired frosting consistency.

Cake Assembling:

  1. To assemble the cake, place one layer on a serving plate and spread it with 1 cup of frosting.
  2. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of candied walnuts and drizzle with one tablespoon of maple syrup. 
  3. Repeat this with the next layer, then top it with the final cake layer. 
  4. Frost the top and sides of the cake, and garnish with the remaining candied walnuts and a drizzle of maple syrup.
